The Sedum Collection takes inspiration from the maritime lighthouse geometries that embody steadiness and a sense of direction. The shade of each Sedum lamp is hand blown and available in the full range of Perennial glass colors. The body is made from solid ash, and the lamp is touch activated via a capacitive brass plate.

I created and refined this lamp through from my final year of undergraduate study at RISD until around Thanksgiving, 2024. The lamp also served as the debut object of Perennial Design Studio. My goal for Sedum Lamp Small was to create an object that embodied the values of Perennial. The lamp needed to be understated and intuitive, and had to in some way emphasize the materiality of the components. The lamp needed to have a jewelry-like preciousness to it, while also being reproduceable in at least a small batch production scale. While these limitations may seem arbitrary, I find that setting constraints for ourselves and others is in fact the primary framework in which we allow for innovation.

Sedum (Stonecrop) is a large genus of succulent plants in the Crassulaceae family, known for their ability to store water in thick, fleshy leaves. Naturally thriving in a variety of environments, including rocky coastal regions and arid landscapes, Sedum is particularly well-suited to oceanic climates where wind, salt, and sandy soils dominate.

These resilient plants are commonly found in coastal settings, flourishing in well-drained soils with minimal water. Species like Sedum acre are especially known for their ability to endure harsh conditions.

Process is everything to me.

Design is a constant cycle of learning, doing, reflecting, and adapting. Over and over. Iterations in paper, foam, wood, plastic, glass and metal all reinforce formal decisions. Every creative knows that the precipice of nonsense is where all our best ideas come from.
